Rock group Yothu Yindi’s ‘Treaty’ is an international hit, and their album ‘Tribal Voice’ goes double platinum. (1991)

Yothu Yindi is an Aboriginal band from the Arnhem Land community of Yirrkala. The band was founded in 1986 by its lead vocalist, songwriter and guitarist Mandawuy Yunupingu. In 1991 their song ‘Treaty’ was a Top 40 hit in Australia – Yothu Yindi was the first Aboriginal band to achieve this feat. The song also became an international hit. Their album ‘Tribal Voice’ reached the Top 20 nationally. The band won five ARIA awards in 1992 and performed at the United Nations to help launch the International Year for the World’s Indigenous People.
