Drought. (1958-66)
The drought that occurred over ten years from 1958 in various parts of Australia was so severe and so widespread that it was almost as bad as the 1902 drought. Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, New South Wales and the Northern Territory were most badly affected from 1957 to 1966 and Victoria and Tasmania were worst off between 1964 and 1968. In many places in south-eastern Australia there was the lowest rainfall on record. What made it a bit easier than in earlier droughts was that there werent as many rabbits as usual, due to the recent temporary success of the myxomatosis virus in killing large numbers during the 1950s. Also, compared with earlier droughts, there was better transport available so it was possible to move stock and food for them, which kept many more animals alive until the rains finally came.
