Nearly 200 swimmers are swept out to sea at Bondi; 5 drown and over 180 are rescued by surf lifesavers. (1938)

By the time of the 75th anniversary of surf lifesaving in Australia, lifesavers had done 264,536 rescues. The most incredible rescue was at Bondi Beach on ‘Black Sunday’ on 6 February 1938 when 200 surfers were swept out to sea. Nearly 80 Bondi Surf Club members helped in the mass rescue and they saved almost everyone. Only five of all those people drowned.
