1858-1943
factory inspector
born on 25 September 1858 at Port Adelaide in South Australia
My name is Annie Duncan and I represent Australians All because, as one of
the first female factory inspectors in Australia, I reported on the often filthy and
overcrowded working conditions of some women in factories, laundries and workrooms, and on
the misery experienced by homeworkers in the clothing trade. I condemned filthy,
overcrowded working conditions and argued that appointing a female doctor to such
factories would eliminate all conditions which are unfavourable to health.
IDEA
FOR SCENE: Show Annie Duncan inspecting a factory where the conditions are dirty,
theres not enough light or air, and the workers are sick.
