IDEA
FOR SCENE: Imagine you are Kay Cottee upon her return to her home in Sydney after 189 days
solo sailing. Write a scene that shows her first meeting with her family and friends.
Background: When Kay Cottee sailed solo around the world, she had to be on her guard. A sudden change in the weather could leave her fighting to keep her course or keep her yacht in one piece. On one occasion the boom was damaged and she had to repair the crack with cut-up pieces of spare spinnaker-pole aluminium. She had to be constantly on the lookout for icebergs or rocks, because crashing into them could sink her. As if the elements of nature werent enough, Cottee was worried that modern-day pirates could attack! There was always so much work to do to keep afloat and never enough time to sleep that she was exhausted and she got terribly homesick. Yet she also experienced the thrill of meeting the challenges she set herself, like sailing around Cape Horn and actually completing the journey. How would she feel? What sights did she see? Write the scene.
